Soft Shell
Every manufacturer has a different approach to softshell fabric, the general idea is to trade maximum "waterproofness" for increased breathability while still retaining a 'weather-proof' element.
Softshell's use stretch woven fabrics with layered tight weaves which are then treated with a durable water repellent (DWR) this prevents the majority of wind and moisture penetrating to your next layer. They move quieter, fit better thanks to their stretchy nature which allows a larger and more fluid range of movement. Compared to hard shells they provide superior comfort in a greater variety of conditions.
The breathablity, durability and versatility of the softshell fabrics has quickly made them favourites throughout the outdoor world, particularly with climber and skiers.
