Windproof clothing is designed to stop the wind blowing away the warm air trapped by your inside layers (is also sometimes refered to as softshell)
These fabrics are usually tightly woven to prevent wind penetrating between the fibres at any speed. They will also help, as with any extra layer, to retain warmth. The "windproofness" of a garment varies with the material used, for example, Gore Windstopper is a fabric lamintae (based on a solid laminate layer) similar to Gore Tex but more breathable and less waterproof. Windstopper however is not as breathable as windproof fabrics such as Polartec Windbloc, Pertex Equilibrium or Anology Windproof by Nikwax, but it will maintian its windproofness longer. Like waterproof jackets, the durable water repellency (DWR) can be improved through the use of treatment products from companys such as Nikwax.
